What’s the Difference Between Accountability and Consequences?

by Dr. Ron Arndt

Dental Staff Accountability
• Accountability is about showing up
• It’s about providing clear expectations
• It’s about doing the things that you say you will do
• It’s about painting a picture of what you’re requesting

• Consequences are the result of an action
• Consequences enable us to see the connection between our choices and what happens to us
• Consequences are clearly connected to the employee’s behavior
• Consequences need to be reasonable, related, and respectful

My tip to my clients is to communicate consequences, as part of establishing clear expectations. This way, you set the stage for accountability.
